In an email sent to graduating students, Grand Valley State University announced they will be hosting a “Move the Tassel” and Celebratory Drive event in December to honor fall 2020 graduates.

The celebration will be partially held online and partially held in person. Graduating students are not required to attend either ceremony.

The first ceremony will be held on Friday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m., as all graduates, families and supporters are invited to join a virtual commencement ceremony.

Commencement events will continue the following day, as graduates are invited to the Fieldhouse Arena on the Allendale Campus to participate in a traditional graduation ceremony.

Graduates are invited to attend on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and will receive an invitation to RSVP in November  to select a specific time to participate with other graduates from their college.

At the Saturday ceremony, professional photos will be taken as each graduate crosses the stage while their name is announced. Graduates and their guests can then participate in a celebratory drive through campus to relive the fond memories of their alma mater.

In an effort to adhere to social distancing guidelines, graduates can invite no more than four guests to Saturday’s event.

Those looking to take part in Friday’s virtual commencement can do so on Facebook or YouTube. Links for that commencement can be found on GVSU’s commencement website in the days leading up to the event.

The Saturday event will also be live-streamed, with more details in the coming months available to graduates here.

Regalia can be purchased through the GVSU’s Oakhall Order Form Online.

While tassels for undergraduates will be provided at Saturday’s event, all other graduation mementos may be purchased on the Commencement Mementos page.

Students must apply for graduation to participate in the celebratory events, as more information will be sent to those who apply.

Graduates who intend to have their name printed in the formal Commencement program are advised to submit their application for graduate by Friday, October 23.
