GV soccer player nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year Award

Former Grand Valley State soccer player Clare Carlson has earned many accolades during her time as a Laker, including two-time GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year and All-GLIAC First Team, NSCAA Scholar All-American, two-time Fall GLIAC Commissioner’s award (2015 and 2016), and a 3.9 GPA.

But now she can add another accomplishment to her list of milestones, as Carlson was selected as a nominee for the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year, per a release from the NCAA. The award includes nominees across all three divisions of play.

The award is established to recognize female college athletes who completed their college careers as student athletes and maintained outstanding character on the field and in the classroom.

During her time on the soccer team, Carlson helped her team capture three Division II National Championships with the Lakers, tallying an 92-5-5 record overall over her four-year career.

Former GV baseball pitcher signs with Traverse City Beach Bums

After setting the NCAA Division II record as the career leader in saves with 40 in the 2017 GLIAC tournament, Grand Valley State baseball closer Matt Williams found another reason to continue his pitching success.

Williams was signed by the Traverse City Beach Bums, a team associated with the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league. The team is one of 12 teams in the league, playing in a 96-game season.

Williams’ best season came in 2016 when he recorded 20 saves, tying the NCAA Division II record for a single season. Not only did he set the record, but Williams also delivered an 0.84 ERA and held opponents to an .123 batting average. Those accolades landed Williams an ABCA, CCA, and NCBWA All-American selection.

A representative from the Beach Bums said the team is “excited” to add a pitcher with his caliber of closing games to their roster.

GV men’s hockey announces 2017 prospect skate

After a successful regular season (23-4-3) and advancing as far as the semifinals in the 2017 ACHA Division II National Championship Tournament, the Grand Valley State men’s club hockey team finally returns to host a prospect skate Saturday, August 12, at Georgetown Ice Arena.

The mini camp skate event provides a way for athletes interested in playing for GVSU to meet with the coaching staff, returning players, and possible offers for the Division II and III teams GVSU offers.

Unlike most collegiate hockey programs, the Lakers are not allowed to offer athletes scholarships because they are not considered a GVSU varsity sport. Head Coach Mike Forbes believes GVSU’s program is unlike any other because of the lack of recruiting players while still being one of the best programs in Division II and III.

The event is set to have multiple teams playing throughout the day, starting at 9 a.m. and concluding activities around 4 p.m.
