Letter to the editor: Presidents’ Ball student safety
Jan 28, 2019
Over 4,000 students will attend this year’s Presidents’ Ball event. For more than three decades the Presidents’ Ball has been a Grand Valley State Unviersity annual tradition. The Presidents’ Ball is a celebration of our campus community and includes several special awards that are presented during the dinner program. The annual ball is hosted by both the university president and student senate president. Many university staff volunteer their time to assist in hosting this event.
In recent years I and other staff have observed a shift in student culture resulting in our concerns for student well-being. This event does have an opportunity for those of legal age to purchase beverages of beer or wine. Our concerns for student well-being are for those students who arrive at the event already under the influence of alcohol or other substances. As everyone looks forward to this exciting evening, the staff want to remind you to be smart in your choices prior to coming to the event. We encourage all students to take care of each other and keep their friends safe. For their own safety, students who appear to be under the influence or intoxicated will not able to enter the event or ride the event shuttle bus to downtown. We want everyone to be safe and to have a fun time at Presidents’ Ball.
