From the Wilted Rose Tavern, offering hot chocolate to chilly visitors, to the noble knights swinging swords on the lawn, the 18th annual Grand Valley State University Renaissance Faire welcomed guests into another time period, in another world — at least for the weekend, anyway.

Renaissance club members put on a show for all ages to enjoy. Tents littered the clock tower plaza outside Kirkhof, each offering something different – including Gypsy Sisters, henna tattoos, or pirate energy drinks. There were even a few options for the Little Lakers, a kid’s corner with storytelling from any of the costumed fair members and a face-painting tent.

Many items and collectibles occupied the shelves and tables of white merchant tents. Incense, candles, jewelry, homemade knit hats and stones were among many of the selections available.
For patrons who were looking for more excitement, the GVSU Renaissance Faire had live entertainment such as fire jugglers and harpsichord performances.

Mid-afternoon, armored knights staged a sword fight, performing for an audience of upwards of a hundred at a time.

“There really is something for everyone, whether you like to just pass through and look at all the things we have for sale, stay a while for our diverse entertainment, or if you’d like to get dressed up and have fun with our cast members,” said Rachel Bowling, president of the Renaissance Festival Club. “I don’t think you’ll find a bigger gathering of history nerds having a blast.”
