Construction on the new bus route will begin in the winter of 2017 with planned service in 2018. The new line will be faster than Route 50 with level boarding, advanced ticketing, traffic signal prioritization as well as three doors for quicker loading and unloading. The Laker Line will be extra long to work toward a more comfortable ride. 

The route will connect Grand Valley State University’s main campus (Allendale) with the downtown campus and the newly opened Medical Mile. GVSU Transportation Services said that with the creation of the Laker Line, riders will have a direct, more predictable and less congested travel experience. Additionally,  the Laker Line will share stations with the Silver Line, creating a rapid transit network in the community
