“Lose” is not a word that Grand Valley State women’s soccer team is very familiar with. However, the Lakers got a little better acquainted with the concept in their season opener.

GVSU suffered a shocking season 3-0 opening loss at Quincy on Friday.

“Quincy made plays we should have made but didn’t,” said head coach Jeff Hosler. “We need to learn to play with more urgency.”

The Lakers trailed 2-0 at halftime despite outshooting Quincy 14-3. GVSU also had multiple goals overturned because of offside calls. Quincy scored another goal late in the second half to complete the upset.

“I hope this loss carries over to the next game,” Hosler said. “We need to use this as a learning lesson.”

The Lakers used their upset loss to fuel a redemption game, topping Truman State 4-0 to close the weekend.

Seniors led the way for GVSU. Senior forward Maddison Reynolds scored the first goal 10 minutes in. Then, it was the reigning NCSAA Division II Player of the Year Marti Corby’s turn as she found the back of the net. Finally, senior forward Katie Bounds finished off the first half scoring barrage with a strike of her own. The Lakers led 3-0 at the half.

The second half was almost a mirror image of the first half in terms of how the Lakers controlled the game. Senior midfielder Katie Klunder scored the fourth and final goal to put TSU away for good.

After being shut out in the season opener, the Lakers pitched a shutout of their own.

After a short break, the Lakers resume their season on Sept. 11 at home against California State-San Bernardino at 7 p.m.
