Men’s basketball falls to Oakland University in exhibition matchup

The Grand Valley State men’s basketball team trailed the Golden Grizzlies by one basket (40-41) at the half. However, the Lakers eventually fell to the Division I foe 98-68 Monday, Nov. 7. Seniors Luke Ryskamp and Trevin Alexander led the way for GVSU with 13 points each. The Lakers outrebounded the Golden Grizzlies 46-28, but committed 19 turnovers in the process. GVSU will officially start its 2016-17 campaign this weekend, Nov. 11-12, at the GLIAC-GLVC Challenge in St. Louis against Quincy and Missouri-St. Louis. Last season the Lakers swept the challenge, defeating both opponents.

Women’s basketball overwhelmed by Dayton in exhibition

The Grand Valley State women’s basketball team fell to the Dayton Flyers 74-48 Sunday, Nov. 6. The Lakers were led by seniors Lindsay Baker with 11 points to lead the team and Taylor Lutz, who finished with nine points and five rebounds. The Lakers shot only 23.6 percent from the field (13-55). GVSU will look to rebound in its first games of the 2016-17 campaign against Quincy and Truman State in the GLIAC/GLVC challenge at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena this weekend, Nov. 12-13.

Soccer NCAA tournament bracket revealed

The three-time defending national champion Grand Valley State soccer team will try and make it four-in-a-row this year as the Lakers have been selected as the number one overall seed in the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. The team will host the first and second round this weekend at the GVSU soccer field in Allendale. After a first round bye, the Lakers will either face Missouri-St. Louis (No. 4 seed) or Rockhurst (No. 5 seed) Sunday, Nov. 13. GVSU is currently tied for the most national championships with Franklin Pierce with five total national titles.

Football’s Carter named GLIAC Player of the Week

Grand Valley State sophomore running back Martayveus Carter was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week Monday, Nov. 7. Carter helped GVSU survive a double-overtime scare against rival Saginaw Valley State and helped clinch the 2016 GLIAC Football Championship. He ran for 200 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries. His second rushing touchdown was the game-winning score in the 62-56 win. This is the third game this season in which Carter has broke the 200-yard threshold. The Lakers (10-0) will conclude the regular season this Saturday, Nov. 12 on the road against conference foe Wayne State (7-3).
