During the Panhellenic Recruitment Weekend, scheduled activities aim to introduce interested women to the right sorority while sororities search for women who are outgoing, prepared to make a
difference on campus, and interested in sisterhood and leadership.

“There are so many great opportunities that being in a sorority can offer, especially at Grand Valley,”
said senior Amy Kinnary, vice president of Panhellenic Recruitment. “If (anyone is) curious about
sorority life, I would definitely encourage them to sign up.”

The weekend runs Sept. 27 to Sept. 30, and registration for the weekend is available on the
Panhellenic’s GVSU website page. A GPA of 2.5 or higher is required to register, and there is a $20 fee
that goes toward a t-shirt and food for the weekend.

A few pre-recruitment events were held over past weekends to allow interested women a way to get to
know other sorority women on campus.

“I decided to make (the events) more fun so that girls can enjoy it and not get too stressed out,”
Kinnary said.

The recruitment weekend is very precisely scheduled with most of the activities held in the Kirkhof
Center. Orientation begins Thursday, when the potential new members are told what to expect of the
weekend. Friday is the informational round where potential members learn about the nine different
sororities, including Tri Sigma, which is new to GVSU this year.

Saturday consists of the philanthropy round and tours of sorority houses, which each sister is required
to live in for at least one year. On Sunday, potential members decide which sorority they want to join
and rate them by first and second choice.

Bid Night begins Monday, when the women receive their bid cards and an invitation to join a
sisterhood, and then a formal ceremony is held at the Fieldhouse. New members are then introduced
to the entire sorority community.

During this process, the potential members are lead by Roh Gammas, which are recruitment guides for
the weekend. Each Roh Gamma guides a group of between 12 and 20 girls and act as a maternal
figure for the group.

Senior Brooke Tomscik is one of the 28 Roh Gammas for the weekend and is eager to get started.

“I’m really excited to meet these girls and to find out where they end up,” Tomscik said. “Once you get
to know them, it’s going to be really interesting to see which sorority ends up being their home.”

The Roh Gammas disaffiliate from their respective chapters until after recruitment is over in order to
provide unbiased guidance.

“They’re giving up their letters to help girls find their own letters,” Kinnary said.

Senior Meghan Cytacki, vice president of Roh Gamma, is in charge of guiding the Roh Gammas
through their training and the recruitment process.

“Every Roh Gamma hopes to have everyone in their group find their ‘forever home,’” Cytacki said.

Kinnary offers tips to girls who are interested in perusing sisterhood by advising them to keep an
open mind, meet as many people as they can and to just have fun.

“It can be a stressful weekend and it can be jammed packed too,” Kinnary said. “But at the same time,
it’s the greatest experience any woman can go through.”
