GVSU issues safety notice for reported off-campus rape
On Saturday, Oct. 14, Grand Valley State University issued a campus-wide safety notice alerting the university community of a reported rape that occurred near the Allendale Campus.
According to the email, the incident was reported to have occurred between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. Oct. 14 near Lodge Lane. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the report.
“The university put out a safety notice, and the reason for that is the report of a sexual assault, in this case a rape, with an unknown suspect was reported to the sheriff’s office, and in response the university wants to make our community aware of that incident, as the incident was reported to have occurred within proximity of the university,” said Brandon DeHaan, acting director of the GVSU Police Department.

GVSU to host annual Great Lakes History Conference
Grand Valley State University will host the 43rd annual Great Lakes History Conference Friday, Oct. 20, and Saturday, Oct. 21, at the L.V. Eberhard Center. Presentations will be given by representatives from GVSU, as well as more than 20 other institutions.
Michelle Moyd, associate professor of history and interim director of the Center for Research on Race and Ethnicity in Society at Indiana University Bloomington, will be the keynote speaker. Moyd’s topic is titled “Radical Potentials: World War I as Global South War.”
Community Service Learning Center to host Make a Difference Day
The Grand Valley State University Community Service Learning Center (CSLC) is holding its annual Make a Difference Day Saturday, Oct. 21. The day is designed to give GVSU students and community members the opportunity to serve non-profit organizations across the greater Grand Rapids and Allendale areas.
The Native American Student Associate (NASA) is also holding an event in conjunction with CSLC at the Norton Mound National Historic Landmark, where NASA students will be cleaning the ground. Students can register to volunteer on GVSU’s website at www.gvsu.edu/service/make-a-difference-day-37.htm.
GVSU to hold legal studies professional panel
Grand Valley State University will host a panel of legal studies professionals and students Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. in Room 136E of the Richard M. DeVos Center. Those attending will have the opportunity to hear about the various careers in the legal profession from speakers involved in the field in West Michigan.
Campus Links program earns national recognition
Grand Valley State University’s Campus Links program, designed for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), was named by Online College Plan as one of the top 10 programs in the country for students with ASD. The program received recognition for its success in helping students adjust to higher education and preparing them to assimilate to their professional lives.
Faculty panel to discuss early stages of Trump presidency
The Kappa Phi chapter of the Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society and the department of political science will host a faculty-led panel on the presidential administration of President Donald Trump. Topics will include media relations with the president, foreign policy and a more intense look at the administration’s impact on the state of Michigan. The panel will held Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. in Au Sable Hall, Room 2303.
