International Family and Friends: Dominican Republic

Grand Valley State University professors Medar Serrata and Rebecca Castellanos will be hosting the next installment of the International Family and Friends (IFF) event series from the Padnos International Center. 

Celebrating the Dominican Republic, this event will be held at Mi Casa Restaurante Friday, Oct. 6, starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $12 at www.gvsu.edu/istudents/iffoct6 and include a Dominican buffet dinner and non-alcoholic drinks. Faculty and staff members at GVSU are encouraged to attend and reserve seating soon, as spots are limited.

Overnight Service Trip to be held Friday, Oct. 6

For Grand Valley State University students interested in giving back, the Overnight Service Trip, a LIB 100- and 201-approved event, may offer an interesting and engaging way to spend the weekend.

The trip, which will be to Grand Haven’s Momentum Center for Social Engagement, will have students spend one-and-a-half days learning how the Grand Haven community is impacted by the organization. The Overnight Service Trip program consistently tries to educate students and prepare them for lives devoted to challenging economic inequalities. Meals and transportation will be provided for students who attend.

Brass All-State clinic to be held Sunday, Oct. 8

High school students who play brass instruments will be invited to Grand Valley State University’s campus for a brass clinic, hosted by brass faculty at GVSU. The clinic will be held Sunday, Oct. 8, from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Thomas J. and Marcia J. Haas Center for Performing Arts.

The clinic will feature classes for high school students in preparation for their upcoming All-State auditions. Moreover, there will be a feature of the current GVSU student brass ensemble and a recital by the faculty brass quintet.

Art and human trafficking discussion 

The Global Studies and Social Impact department at Grand Valley State University will be hosting a discussion in conjunction with ArtPrize contestants about art and human trafficking Monday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
