Fidelity to hold retirement planning sessions on campus

Fidelity Investments will be holding a retirement planning session for those interested in starting an investment plan for their retirement Thursday, Jan. 26, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Grand Valley State University’s Kirkhof Center. Fidelity Workplace Planning and Guidance Consultant Seth Yanik will sit with people one-on-one and go over ways to manage retirement savings goals, review investment decisions and set up individual plans.

Interested individuals should reserve a time slot to meet with Yanik as soon as possible at 1 (800) 642-7131 or on their website. If no spots are available for the Thursday session, there will be another round of advising Thursday, Feb. 16, and Thursday, March 16.

People who will be attending are asked to bring relevant account information and paperwork that will help answer any questions they might have.

Pianist Kwan Yi to play and teach masterclass on campus

Renowned pianist Kwan Yi is set to play a solo piano recital in the Sherman Van Solkema Recital Hall Friday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. Yi is a graduate of the Curtis Institute and is a faculty member at Radford University, located in Virginia.

Yi will also be teaching a masterclass to help Grand Valley State University piano students Saturday, Jan. 28, at 9 a.m. in the Sherman Van Solkema Recital Hall.

Yi has played across Asia, Europe and the United States and has performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony Center, Auditorium du Louvre and several other world venues. He is also a recipient of the National Federation of Music Clubs Award.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Study abroad to hold first-step meeting

The Padnos International Center will hold a first-step meeting for any and all Grand Valley State University students interested in studying abroad in the near future Friday, Jan. 27, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in Lake Ontario Hall. The meeting will cover all the basics of study abroad programs, including finding the right program to fit a student’s needs, ways to get funding and grants and information on the different kinds of academic programs available.

If a student is unable to make it to the meeting, the PIC urges them to attend their walk-in advising sessions in their office located in Lake Ontario Hall.

Social activism talk to take place at GVSU

The Kutsche Office of Local History will host a talk about being a social activist in the current political climate Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons from 12 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. The talk will be given by Louis Moore, a Grand Valley State University history professor and the coordinator for African/African-American studies. Moore will focus on the increase in public protests, boycotts and demonstrations in the past five years that have focused on addressing social inequalities.

Moore will highlight the origins, evolution and deeper meaning of the movement and how local activism connects to national-level movements.
