After an impressive 3-point shooting performance in a win over Rochester on Monday, the Grand Valley State women’s basketball team picked up right where it left off.

GVSU shot 10-of-31 from beyond the arc in a convincing showing against Indianapolis at Fieldhouse Arena on Saturday as the Lakers cruised to a 73-57 triumph.

GVSU’s patented skill from long range was on full display in the first half, when Kat LaPrairie sank five 3-pointers in less than three minutes.

“Kat is playing with confidence and her team is giving her great looks,” said GVSU coach Janel Burgess.

Brionna Barnett and Jammie Botruff also connected on 3s of their own to increase the GVSU total to seven at the half.

“We were successful from behind the 3-point line because of our ball movement and simple basketball,” Burgess said. “We took advantage of what they gave us.”

While shots rained in from 3-point range, GVSU’s Kayla Dawson did her part inside the paint, shooting 4-6 in the first half while pulling down four rebounds.

The Lakers went into halftime up 12 points, 43-31.

Just as with Monday’s game, the prolific perimeter shooting slowed in the second half. The Lakers shot just three triples, but made all three of them.

The team was just as impressive defensively. The Greyhound offense turned the ball over 17 times, and was ultimately unable to mount a comeback. Burgess was pleased with her team’s sustained focus in the game.

“The other key to our success was our preparation,” she said. “My team had tremendous focus at the end of the week and executed the game plan well.”

Kayla Dawson and Piper Tucker led the Lakers on defense, combining for a total of 13 rebounds and three steals.

GVSU out-rebounded Indianapolis 38-28. The Lakers were opportunistic on the glass, and found ways to convert 17 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points.

“Our keys to success were our defensive consistency with rebounding and help side,” Burgess said.

LaPrairie dropped 17 first-half points and finished with 20. Dawson ended the night with 17 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Though the Lakers earned a well-fought victory, Burgess said there’s room for improvement.

“We still have many things to clean up,” Burgess said. “Not foul as much defensively, getting in the gym and making shots in our free time, plus many other things.”
