Theatre workshop offers acting instruction

Students interested in Shakespearean acting are encouraged to attend a free Shakespeare workshop on March 15 to work with a professional. The workshop is open for students hoping to audition for the annual Shakespeare Festival, expand their theatre skills or experiment with a new acting style. Katherine Mayberry will work with attendees on monologues, clarity, movement and language. As executive director and member of the Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company, Mayberry teaches workshops at Interlochen Center for the Arts and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp as well as schools and universities. Workshop participants will undergo physical and text exercises to expand their skills in both new and familiar monologues. The first 20 students to sign up will be admitted, and those interested can sign up at the box office. The workshop will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Haas Center for Performing Arts Room 1721. 

Art and health collide in ‘Looking with Intent’  

The “Looking with Intent” series continues this week to explore the intersection of art and health care. Faculty and students are welcome to join the discussion about the effects of art on clinical skills. Art gallery programs manager Stacey Burns will facilitate discussion, along with work life consultant Elisa Salazar and assistant professor Heather Wallace. No art experience is needed to attend. “Looking with Intent” will take place at the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences on March 12 at 8 a.m. and March 13 at noon. The group will meet in the Central Hall before going to the gallery.

Student filmmakers to be recognized at film awards

Following the first-ever Grand Valley Film Festival this week, an awards show will take place to congratulate the nominees and winners on March 22. Students can take pictures on the red carpet and enjoy dinner and drinks at a pre-show reception. Red carpet attire is encouraged. There will be performances by Queens of Dance, the Grand Valley State University Comedy Club and STAGE (Student Technicians and Actors Guild for Entertainment). Satirical YouTube rapper Gmcfosho is scheduled to host. The reception will start at 6 p.m., with the ceremony at 7 p.m.  

Collaborative Mars exhibit on display

As a continuation of GVSU’s 2018 Fall Arts Celebration, selections from “Mars: Astronomy and Culture” are on display in the Eberhard Center. Photos, drawings, posters, video projections and other media were curated by the Pasadena Arts Council in California to show the advancement of technology and its effects on astronomy. During the Fall Arts Celebration, the exhibit was divided between GVSU, Calvin College and the Holland Museum. The selections from all three venues will be displayed in the West Wall Gallery until June 21.

Film festival to celebrate Arabic films

A two-day film showing will take place next week to share Arabic films. Organized by the Arab Culture Club and Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, the festival will include discussion led by professors Ashley Bisutti and Majd Al-Mallah. Amber Fares’ debut film “Speed Sisters,” which follows the story of the Middle East’s first all-women racing team, will play on March 19. “Grandma, a Thousand Times” is a documentary directed by Mahmoud Kaabour that addresses a woman’s thoughts and struggles at the end of her life and will be shown on March 20. Both movies will begin at 6 p.m. in Area 51 in Kirkhof Center.
