River City Water Festival to celebrate Grand River
Grand Rapids is gearing up to celebrate the third annual River City Water Festival, which will be held Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Grand Rapids Public Museum. The festival is a celebration of the Grand River and the ways in which to shaped the city of Grand Rapids.
The festival will feature hands-on and educational exhibits that will show participants the importance of keeping the waterways clean and preventing future destruction. There will also be an award ceremony for the Water Superhero Poster contest, a contest that was open to fifth, sixth, and seventh-grade students in the era. The top 20 posters will be on display.
The event is free and open to the public.
GV named to transfer honor roll
Grand Valley State University has recently been named to Phi Theta Kappa’s (the world’s largest international honors society for two-year schools) 2017 Transfer Honor Roll, a list that recognizes colleges and universities for their excellence in providing pathways for community college students to transfer with ease. GVSU is one of 63 schools that made the list.
Schools that made the list are judged on partnerships between institutions, collaboration with community colleges, assistance pre and post transfer and innovations in transfer pathways. The university will be publicly recognized in PTK’s publication “Partners in Excellence.”
Resistance series hold second part on environmental injustices
The Resistance Series will be holding the second part of its awareness and action campaign Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m. in Grand Valley State University’s Kirkhof Center. They will be focusing on environmental injustices that have taken places over the past couple of years in places like Flint, Michigan and the Dakota Access Pipeline at the Standing Rock Native American reservation.
The discussion will also focus on the racial/ethnic disparities as well as addressing the effects they can have at local, regional and national levels. There will be a guest speaker and the event is LIB 100/201 approved.
