Middle East Film Festival at GV

Three free nights of films, music and food is perfect for the broke college student. Middle East Studies, Arab Culture Club, the Frederik Meijer Honors College, Padnos International Center and Modern Languages and Literatures will host the events. Everyone is welcome to the event which will take place on Oct. 9 through 11 from 6-10 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center. The films will begin at 7 p.m. each evening. The four films that will be featured are “Distant,” “A Separation,” “Budrus” and “Salaam Band.” “Distant” is about a 40-year-old photographer, Mahmut, and his journey to get to the top. This film has an introduction by Barb Roos from the School of Communications. “A Separation” is the newest film in the line up and history professor Chad Lingwood does its introduction. It was made in 2011 and is about an Iranian couple that has to deal with family problems and the debate over whether they should leave or stay in Iran. Sebastian Maisel from Middles East Studies and Modern Languages and Literatures Department will also be featured in the introduction of “Budrus.” This 2009 film is about a Palestinian leader working in an unarmed movement. The fourth film “Salaam Band” teaches the viewer about the culture and will feature music from the Middle East and North Africa.
