Across the globe, modes of self expression varies individually and by country. For some, art is the perfect method to release personal feelings. However, fashion has become a global trend to represent individuality, whether one wears clothing traditional to a culture or a simple holiday sweater.

On April 8, Grand Valley State University’s fashion club will host the GV Fashion Show for the first time in six years. For 2016, the theme of the show will be the “four seasons.”

Audra Kimble, sophomore at GVSU, has been a part of the club for two years. She said the club has helped her make connections with other GVSU students, local business owners and community members.

“We hope that by showcasing the four seasons, it will open people’s minds to how they can look, even in the extreme weather we have,” Kimble said. “We are trying to encourage people to think outside the box.”

In the future, Pornchanok Srikaeo, a marketing major and club member of three years, aspires to become a professional runway model.

“I joined the club because I am passionate about fashion. Personally, I like to express myself through the clothes and makeup I wear,” Srikaeo said. “I hope that one day I could work in the fashion industry.”

The fashion club was founded in 2008, and is expecting around 80 guests at this year’s show.

“It will give us the opportunity to show students and the community as a whole, who we are and what GV fashion club is capable of showcasing,” Kimble said. “This event can also represent GVSU in the sense of creativity, leadership and teamwork.”

The fashion show will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center’s Pere Marquette Room. In addition, the event includes free admission and food.

“We are also being sponsored by many small businesses that are located in the heart of Grand Rapids, so we hope to bring attention to some of the boutiques and shops right in our own city,” Srikaeo said.

While the designs being showcased was provided by local businesses, some outfits will be styled by members of the club.

“I joined this club because of the obvious: I love clothes. I think first impressions are everything, and the first thing someone notices is what you are wearing,” Kimble said. “Clothes tell everything about your mood, personality and interests.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the first hour of the event will feature food, drinks, music and a chance to mingle with the small business sponsors. In addition, GVSU students will sing a live performance to begin the runway show at 8 p.m.

The fashion club meets every Tuesday at 9 p.m. To encompass global perspectives, Srikaeo and Kimble said they focus on several different areas of real-world fashion.

“Of course we talk about clothes, but we also have other general meetings that include topics such as hair, makeup, sewing, blogging, sketching, photography, modeling and more,” Srikaeo said. “We give the students opportunities to learn and experiment with what the fashion industry is like in the real world.”
