Bart Williams named GLIAC Jack H. McAvoy Award Winner

Former Grand Valley State senior quarterback and all-time GVSU passing yards leader Bart Williams has been selected as the 2018 Jack H. McAvoy Award winner by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) football coaches.

The award is presented annually to the GLIAC football player who best combines outstanding character and leadership on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. Williams is the third Laker football player to earn the honor, joining Alton Voss (2016) and Jeff Fox (1998).

The award is annually awarded to a GLIAC football player who is an exemplary character, as well as someone who shows great leadership and service within their community.

Williams, who currently holds a post-graduate GPA of 4.0 in marketing, is active in community service projects, such as Timberwolf Lake Young Life Camp, Allendale Public Schools Anti-Bullying Campaign and the Grand Valley State Relay for Life.

Men’s golf inks four new golfers for 2019-20 season

Grand Valley State men’s golf head coach Gary Bissell announced the signing of four newcomers for the 2019-20 season.

The incoming class features Drew Coble (Lake Orion, Mich.), Charles DeLong (DeWitt, Mich.), Alex Jordan (Mason, Mich.) and Nick Krueger (Spring Lake, Mich.), who will join the team next fall.

When asked about DeLong, Bissell said that the DeWitt native reminds him of current GVSU golfer Alex Scott, as he sees great potential in DeLong and the rest of the incoming class.

“Charlie reminds me of Alex Scott in the aspect he is outrageously competitive,” Bissell said. “He carries a chip of his shoulder which we absolutely love in this program. Charlie’s intrinsic drive to be great is going to carry him a long way, and we strongly believe he can be a premier player.”
