In three games over the span of two days, the Grand Valley State baseball team only managed to secure one victory against the Panthers of Davenport University.

Due to weather and high winds in the Grand Rapids area, these games were pushed back one day, and the finale of the series will take place 2 p.m. on Monday, April 9, at Davenport.

The first matchup was a slugfest, as both teams combined for 26 runs. In the last inning, GVSU was down 14-9 but scored three runs to help stage the would-be comeback victory. However, the hitting burst was too late, and the Lakers fell to Davenport 14-12 on Saturday, April 7.

The Lakers pounded out 20 hits Saturday, compared to 11 knocks by the Panthers, but left 13 runners on base and committed five errors in the defeat. Five Lakers had multiple hits in the game: Ryan Blake-Jones led the way with four, while Austin LaDoux and Ricky Clark had three hits apiece, and Josh C. Smith and Alex Mandeville each had two hits. Zach Berry launched a home run for GVSU in the game as well. Jake Mason suffered the loss for the Lakers despite not allowing a hit or earned run in 3.2 innings of work.

On Sunday, April 8, the Lakers split the doubleheader against the Panthers, dropping the first game 6-3 but recovering for a 2-1 win in the second. The Lakers’ overall record now stands at 17-13 on the year. 

GVSU returns home Tuesday, April 10, to host Hillsdale College in regional, non-conference action at the GVSU baseball field.
