GVL Archive Sweat it out: Students use the exercise equipment at GVSU’s rec center, where the New Year, New You program will take place this winter semester.

New Year, New You is a fresh program being offered by Campus Recreation and the Fitness and Wellness Center to help guide staff and students at Grand Valley State University meet any of their fitness related New Year goals.

“We will meet as a group one or two days a week and trainers will also provide workouts for participants to complete on their own throughout the six week program,” said Courtney McCotter, a NYNY trainer who previously worked with GVSU’s Biggest Loser program. “One of the main goals of the program is weight loss, but we are able to accommodate additional goals that participants may enter the program with.”

Similar programs have been offered in the past, including Biggest Loser and small group training.

“Anyone looking for some fitness guidance and motivation from educated trainers should consider participating because this is a great time to get active and make positive health changes,” McCotter said.

McCotter is primarily managing the program. Amy Campbell, Campus Recreation’s assistant director, is supervising her, along with another trainer. Campbell said that everything will be based around the participants’ goals, but the program will essentially be geared toward weight loss and developing healthy habits.

“We have had a variety of fitness levels participate in this type of program in the past, from trained athletes, to beginners,” she said. “We welcome all fitness levels, but the purpose of the program is to develop healthy habits and is oriented around participants weight loss goals.”

Although the program is not designed around incentives, prizes are going to be awarded. Certain “challenges” will be planned, and deserving participants will be rewarded. Workouts will be provided for days outside of the scheduled training times, so it will be encouraged and required for participants to workout on their own, as this will be essential in making progress towards their goals.

“If you are motivated to make changes, or if you need some motivation, definitely consider NYNY,” McCotter said. “Justin and I are excited to help the participants make positive changes in the New Year, and for life.”

The program will take place on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. from Jan. 17 to Feb. 21. Staff and students can sign up for $10 at the Fitness and Wellness Center in the Recreation Center. There is minimal paperwork that needs completion to sign up. The deadline to do so is on January 20. “With new year’s resolutions, and spring break only a few months away, we wanted to design the program around a motivated and captive group,” Campbell said. “Not only will participants be getting some great workouts, but it should be a lot of fun. Spots are limited, and they may fill up fast, so you will want to sign up early.”
