World Marrow Donor Day registration drive at GV
For those interested in donating bone marrow, the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation will host a registration drive with the goal to increase marrow donations nation and campus-wide. To save a life, the registration takes up to five minutes and requires a quick test of health to ensure patient safety.
The drive will take place in the Grand Valley State University Kirkhof Center Saturday, Sept. 17 from noon to 4 p.m. The registration can also be completed online at www.giftoflife.org. The donation process requires a cheek swab test to be completed beforehand, and test kits can be ordered online at the Gift of Life website.
‘Metaphors we die by’ event focuses on communication
Speaker John Lynne from the University of Pittsburgh, will present a lecture at Grand Valley State University focused on metaphors and the meanings they carry throughout life. This language centered event will dive into communication from both an academic and public perspective.
The event is sponsored by the School of Communications, philosophy department, the cell and molecular biology department and the Office of the Provost for Health. The lecture will take place Monday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in the DeVos Center.
Surplus Store to hold ‘back to class’ open hours
With sustainability in mind and a goal to generate affordable prices on items used by Grand Valley State University, the GVSU Surplus Store will hold open hours Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The store is open to students, faculty, staff and the general public.
Stop by the “Back to Class” sale and shop for electronics, furniture and other lightly used office supplies at a reduced cost. The entrance is located at 140 Front St. SW across the from the Bicycle Factory and near the Seidman College of Business. Customers can purchase items online anytime, and pick up the package in-store at a scheduled time.
Farmers’ Market offers free bike tune-ups
For students in need of bike repairs for a small price, the Bike Shop will host a bike tune up event at the Grand Valley State University’s farmers’ market in parking lot G Wednesday, Sept 21.
The tune-ups will begin at 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., as students can drop off their bikes free of charge for repairs. In addition, the GVSU farmers’ market will be open from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., as local food vendors will sell fresh and wholesome foods to students, faculty, staff and the public.
The farmers’ market will be open Saturday, Sept 17 as well during GVSU’s Family Day festivities. The market plans to hold hours every Wednesday until the end of October.
