GVSU to host annual 3-Minute Thesis competition

The 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition gives graduate students the opportunity to share their research with other students in a competitive atmosphere. Each participant will be allowed one static slide and will be required to deliver their presentation in under three minutes. 

Currently, 17 students from various disciplines have been selected to compete this year, including from biomedical sciences, cell and molecular biology, College Student Affairs Leadership, criminal justice, biology, Doctor of Nursing Practice, engineering, public health and social work. A panel of judges will select a winner, who will take home $500 in cash and receive funding to attend the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools 3MT competition in Grand Rapids in April.

Students, faculty, community members and family members are invited to attend the competition, which will be held Thursday, Feb. 15, at 3:30 p.m. in the DeVos Center Loosemore Auditorium.

Tickets for GVSU Night at Comerica Park now available for purchase

Comerica Park will host a special Tigers game Tuesday, July 31, that will benefit the Grand Valley State University community. The game will begin at 7:10 p.m., and the Detroit Tigers will be hosting the Cincinnati Reds.

More than 2,200 GVSU students, faculty, staff members, alumni and friends attended last year’s GVSU Night at Comerica Park. The event raised $11,225 for the GVSU Scholarship Fund. 

To purchase tickets for the game, visit www.gvsu.edu/tigers. Ticket purchases, ranging from $27 to $44, will include a $5 donation to the scholarship fund and a limited edition GVSU/Detroit Tigers branded baseball hat. 

Those who purchase tickets by April 30 will be eligible to enter a drawing to be on the field when the check is awarded for the scholarship fund. Bus transportation to Detroit will be available from the Allendale and Pew campuses for $15 per rider.

‘Lunch and Learn’ series taking place

Grand Valley State University Alcohol & Other Drugs Campus Education Services (ACES) will be hosting a monthly series titled “Lunch and Learn.” The series gives students the opportunity to bring a lunch to a discussion led by a GVSU speaker.

The first event is taking place Wednesday, Feb. 7, at noon in the Kirkhof Center, Room 0073. The discussion is titled “The Addictive Brain” and will be led by Dr. Eric Klingensmith of the GVSU Counseling Center. Klingensmith will speak about the science behind the brain becoming addicted to substances.

AMA with religious leaders taking place

Grand Valley State University Campus Interfaith Resources will be holding an “Ask Me Anything” event with religious, spiritual and secular leaders on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 5:30 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center, Rooms 2215/16.
