Quick Hits: Both XC teams finish in the top-10, tennis shines in Wisconsin, softball alumni cookout scheduled

GVSU Cross Country concludes first meet, women finish eighth, men finish 10th 

The Grand Valley State men’s and women’s cross country teams opened their seasons at the Knight Invitational this weekend in Grand Rapids, Mich. The women placed eighth as a team with 186 points while the men finished 10th with 225 points.

For the women’s 5K, GVSU had three runners place in the top 25 as Olivia Brian led all Lakers with an 11th place finish (18:41.5). Rachael Walters placed 22nd out of the 287 runners (19:05.5) and Molly Schmidt came in right behind her in 23rd (19:06.5).

In the men’s 8K, the Lakers had four athletes place in the top 60. Out of the 298 runners competing, Ben Zaremba finished 13th (25:48.7) and Garrett White placed 32nd (26:23.0). Collin Herrmann and Bennett Peterson both crossed the finish line within four seconds of each other, with Hermann finishing 58th (26:46.7) and Peterson finishing 60th (26:50.4).

With the majority of the athletes competing for GVSU being freshmen and sophomores, both the men’s and women’s teams will race their full rosters this Friday, Sept. 14, as they travel to East Lansing for the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State.

GVSU Tennis compete in Warhawk Fall Invitational, earn five first-place finishes

The Grand Valley State men’s tennis team traveled to Whitewater, Wis. for the Warhawk Fall Invitational hosted by Wisconsin-Whitewater this weekend. This was the first of three tournaments the Lakers will compete in this fall, as they earned one first-place finish in the doubles competition and four first-place victories in singles play.

In doubles, D.J. Colantone and Sebastian Lescoulie finished first in the No. 1 bracket, winning their first two matches by scores of 8-2 before advancing to the finals and winning 8-6.

Colantone and Lescoulie would also go on to win their respective singles bracket, as Colantone won the No. 3 singles bracket and Lescoulie won the No. 4 singles bracket. They weren’t the only Lakers to survive their bracket, as Marcus Muniz-Infante won the No. 6 singles bracket and Nick Welker won the No. 7 singles bracket.

GVSU’s continues their fall match-ups this week as they travel to Holland, Mich. to compete in the Hope Invitational on Friday (Sept. 14) and Saturday (Sept. 15). 

GVSU Softball sets date for 2018-19 Alumni Game and Cookout

The Grand Valley State softball team will be hosting their annual alumni game and cookout at the GVSU softball field on Oct. 6 at 11 a.m.

GVSU will be playing Aquinas and Kalamazoo Community College at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. that day to close out their 2018 fall schedule. Between the two games, alumni and parents of the current players will meet with this year’s team and mingle over meals between games. All alumni and parents are welcome to bring a dish to pass.

Following the softball games, the Grand Valley State football team will kickoff their 2018 homecoming game against Dixie State at 7 p.m.
