Six athletes inducted into GVSU’s Athletic Hall of Fame
On Friday, six former Grand Valley State University athletes were inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Headed by Matt Thornton, a relief pitcher for the Chicago White Sox who played baseball at GVSU from 1996 to 1998, the class represents individual excellence from the late ’90s and early 2000s.
Other members of the 2011 class are softball great Amber Castonguay (softball from 1999 to 2002), Eric Cowles (men’s golf from 1998 to 2001), Reggie Spearmon (football from 1999 to 2002), Mirela Tutundzic (women’s soccer from 2002 to 2005) and Jason VanElst (track and field from 1999 to 2002).
During their time at GVSU, Cowles earned the first All-American honors for the men’s golf team in 2001 and Spearmon, still GVSU’s leader in career-rushing yards, was a member of the 2002 Division II national champion football team.
The class of 2011 will be honored with plaques in the Fieldhouse Arena.
