Paradoxes in Shakespeare
GVSU’s Shakespeare Festival Scholar-in-Residence John Cox held the lecture “Paradoxia Shakespeareana” as a part of this year’s Shakespeare festival. The lecture was Sept. 27 from 4 to 5 p.m. and located in the Pere Marquette room in the Kirkhof Center. The event was free and open to the public and followed the Shakespeare Festival Greenshow.
In Cox’s lecture, he discussed the many paradoxes included in Shakespeare’s work. He will provide specific examples to support his claims of the paradoxes on the topics of religion, language and time.
Young Artists displayed at Downtown Market
Downtown Market will be hosting Feast For the Eyes, an art exhibit featuring food inspired artwork by students from Grand Rapids Area Schools. Voting opens Oct. 4 and will run until Oct. 27.
Submissions were required to either be created from food products or represent food in some way. The artwork will be voted on by the public and the winning classroom in each category will be awarded a Love’s ice cream party and a $500 grant for their school. The two categories include kindergarten through eighth graders and ninth through twelfth graders.
Celebrate Polish Culture at Pulaski Days
Grand Rapids will be celebrating Pulaski Days Sept. 28 to Oct. 6. The festival is named after American Revolutionary War Hero General Casimir Pulaski, who was a Polish Immigrant and is widely known throughout Europe and the Polish American community. In 1973, Ed Czyzyk and Walter Ulanch founded Pulaski Days as an event to celebrate Polish culture and support social community clubs such as Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
The weeklong celebration included a golf outing Sept. 28 and a flag raising ceremony Sept. 29. A kielbasa eating contest will take place Oct. 2 followed later in the week by a parade celebrating Polish pride on Oct. 5.
Help name Grand Rapids Favorite Donut
Sample the variety of donuts the Grand Rapids area has to offer at The Grand Rapids Donut Festival, held downtown at B.O.B.’s Brewery Oct. 5. Ticket buyers 21 and up will receive a drink ticket at the door to pair beer with their donut sampling. Tickets are limited and can be bought online prior to the event. Children are welcomed to the event.
The event will feature eight to 10 vendors and customers will receive about a quarter of a donut at each stop. There will be other food and nonalcoholic beverages available at the event, in addition to the beer and donuts.
