Corpse flower to bloom at GV
The Grand Valley Greenhouse corpse flower is blooming this week. The flower was donated by Tim Strickler, professor emeritus of biomedical sciences, around the same time the Kindschi Hall of Science first opened in 2015. The corpse flower, Amorphophallus titanum, only blooms every seven to 10 years. When the flower blooms, it emits a distinctive smell of rotting flesh, the smell is supposed to attract flies that pollinate the plant. This will be the first time the plant has blossomed since it was donated almost seven years ago. Once the plant becomes more established it could bloom faster. The flower is a spectacle for many, because of its peculiar smell and deep burgundy shade. As long as the flower is blooming the greenhouse will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
