While the federal government under President Donald Trump has become seemingly more desperate than ever to drag the U.S. into a dark age, the Republican-led Michigan House of Representatives seems all too willing to pull Michiganders along the same path. This ploy is clear in the current stalemate between the House and Democratic Senate over the state’s budget.
The version of the proposed budget passed by Republicans in the state House shows a complete disregard for the lives of Michigan residents and for Michigan itself. There are enough broad cuts to social and public services in this budget that would make the Big Beautiful Bill blush. I will address what I believe is the most significant and damaging cut near the end of this article, though that dubious honor may be up for debate. To begin, I would like to run through some other “highlights.”
The most significant and damaging cuts in this budget version are those to the Department of Education, amounting to a staggering $1.4 billion. It does not take a political analyst to see how damaging this could be, especially to underprivileged school districts. This is particularly vicious considering many teachers are in contract limbo, with tooth-and-nail union fights taking place in districts such as Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Brighton and Utica, among others. With the livelihood of teachers already in the balance, faithful House Republicans choose to add fuel to the fire.
In addition to potential funding cuts to education, there is a $3.79 billion reduction proposed for the Department of Health and Human Services, particularly regarding Medicaid and behavioral health. This is presumably because the mental health of our most vulnerable citizens is of little concern to Michigan House Republicans and their donors. After all, what spending is more wasteful than the well-being of Michiganders?
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development also faces a looming $54 million being cut from its budget. This is a confusing strategy, considering not just how much of Michigan’s economy runs on farmers, but also the amount of support Michigan Republicans receive from rural areas supported by this bill. I suppose that House Republicans will revert to their tried-and-true tactic of lying to their constituents entirely. Of course, there is also the option to outright ignore your constituents, which has been the strategy of Rep. Tim Beson, who refuses to schedule a town hall where he could be questioned. Ah yes, the most important task of a representative is not to speak to constituents. I mean, how could one possibly do their job when they have to hear their constituents tell them about the terrible job they’re doing?
Last but certainly not least, some of the most dramatic cuts come at the expense of Michigan’s greatest treasure, our beautiful wildlife. Michigan Republicans look to cut $200 million from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, as well as $53.2 million from the Department of Natural Resources. In the name of government efficiency, House Republicans seek to gut funding that goes toward protecting the Great Lakes, which are not only a massive source of tourism for the state but also happen to be one of the largest sources of freshwater on the continent.
This entire budget represents an organized attack on the people of Michigan. The only commitment House Republicans have is not to the people of Michigan, but an unending fealty to the Trump administration’s strategy, which they are willing to follow off a cliff, dragging all of us down with them.
