October approached faster than many of us anticipated, and some students are already putting their costumes together for Halloween. Plenty movies, shows and memes debuted this past year, providing many options for costume ideas. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and I love exploring the internet to see what pop-cultural references people dress up as. I already have some ideas of what we might see out and about this Halloween.
One costume I definitely think I will be seeing trick-or-treating or bobbing for apples is the character Aunt Gladys from the movie “Weapons.” This horror-mystery film revolves around a small town thrown for a loop when almost all the students from one elementary school class go missing. All but one child gets up in the middle of the night, leaving their homes. Aunt Gladys, or Gladys’ Lilly, played by Amy Madigan, is the aunt of the one child who did not go missing. Gladys’ character has a very eccentric look, sporting red hair, mini bangs, huge glasses and bold red lipstick. Due to her unique appearance and popularity of the movie, I see this being a big costume.
Another costume I know we’ll be seeing this Halloween is Labubu. A Labubu is a little collectible plush with the appearance of a fierce bunny or little monster, featuring pointed ears and sharp teeth. The Labubu has become popular over social media this past year, and has evolved into a figure for mass consumption. I’ve already seen people creating Labubu costumes in anticipation of Halloween, and I’m certain we’ll be seeing a lot of these monsters roaming the streets.
A popular meme I see becoming a couple’s costume this Halloween is the “kiss cam incident” from the Coldplay concert. Coldplay, a British rock band led by Chris Martin, was performing when Andy Byron, the CEO of the company Astronomer, was shown on the Jumbotron swaying to the music while holding a woman in his arms. Once realizing they were on the big screen, they ducked away, as they didn’t want to be seen. It was quickly revealed the couple was having an affair, and the clip quickly turned into a trending meme. It was even mocked at sports games and other events that normally feature a Jumbotron. I can easily imagine couples throwing on wigs and getting creative to recreate the infamous Coldplay kiss cam incident.
A group costume I’m sure will be infiltrating many friend groups are characters from the movie “Sinners.” This vampire-inspired horror film stars Michael B. Jordan as the twin brothers Smoke and Stack, both former soldiers returning to their hometown to open a juke joint. Their plans are interrupted when the town becomes overrun by vampire-like entities. “Sinners” was undoubtedly one of the most iconic films of 2025 and arguably one of the best movies to come out this year. I predict the cast of “Sinners” becoming one of the most popular group costumes this year.
Overall, I feel Halloween 2025 will be one of the most interesting and creative Halloweens I’ve yet to experience. From funny memes and pop-cultural references to groundbreaking movies, this Halloween is bound to be filled with unique costumes and good memories.
