Grand Valley State University’s annual Spring Concert has been a highlight of the winter semester that many students look forward to, giving students a chance to break free from their academic constraints and enjoy a lively, on-campus event. Following the cancellation of last year’s concert, event organizers say they’ve secured an artist for the April performance.
With live music performances from popular artists, the concert has become a staple of campus life and a shared experience for students across all majors and class years. For many, it serves as a celebratory pause near the end of the academic year and way to bring the campus community together.
After the 2025 Spring Concert was unexpectedly canceled, students were left wondering what went wrong and whether the long-standing tradition had come to a halt. The cancellation sparked disappointment and confusion, especially among new students and those who anticipated the event throughout the year. As the current semester moves forward, Campus Activities Board is once again preparing for the annual concert with the intention to avoid past issues. CAB members emphasize that lessons learned from last year’s cancellation have directly shaped how planning has unfolded this time around.
As explained by Katie Garrett, assistant director of programming, offers were made to several artists last year. These were countered with fees that exceeded CAB’s approved budget. Garrett said CAB prioritized fiscal responsibility rather than rushing into any agreements that could impact future events.
“The decision to cancel was made carefully and with long-term sustainability in mind,” Garrett said.
In response, CAB has adjusted its planning timeline. They began the offering process much earlier this year, giving an ample amount of time for artists’ responses. This earlier timeline also gave organizers more flexibility in coordinating vendors, logistics, ticket sales and marketing in preparation for the event, which is slated to occur April 10.
“An offer was accepted before winter break, which allowed planning to move forward with greater clarity and stability,” Garrett said.
With prior concerts featuring T-Pain, Yung Gravy and blackbear, students are excited to see which familiar faces will shake campus next. The history of well-known performers has raised expectations and generated buzz among students eager for another memorable concert experience. The anticipated artist will be announced at the President’s Ball, which will be held at the end of the month, Saturday, Feb. 28. Attendees will be among the first to hear who the featured Spring Concert artist is.
As student anticipation grows, some reflect on how they felt this time last year. Student Amani Hurt recalled the excitement leading up to the 2025 concert prior to its cancellation, noting how quickly speculation spread across campus.
“I remember there being so many rumors about who would be performing, and there is just as much, if not more, anticipation now that the concert is making a comeback,” Hurt said.
With the concert returning after last year’s cancellation, the buildup seems heightened. Many are eager to see if the event will “redeem itself,” and whether it will hold up compared to prior performances.
As planning continues, CAB is confident that changes implemented this year will lead to the Spring Concert’s successful return. With earlier preparation and heightened student anticipation, the event is set to reclaim its place as a staple of campus life.
