Steve Wozniak will serve as keynote speaker at Grand Valley State University’s upcoming Commencement ceremonies.
The Apple co-founder and personal computing entrepreneur will speak at each of the three ceremonies at Van Andel Arena May 1-2.
Alongside Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, Wozniak is known for creating Apple Inc., the multinational technology company that is ubiquitous for its smartphone and laptop products. In 1976, the pioneer designed and built the Apple Computer 1, a breakthrough innovation in personal computing. His work in philanthropy, software engineering and technology development continues to this day.
Wozniak looks forward to recognizing the achievements of graduating students. Previously, Wozniak was involved in Tech Week 2026, an event series that took place in Grand Rapids last September.
“I’m honored to return to Grand Rapids and celebrate this important milestone with the Grand Valley graduates and the GVSU community,” Wozniak said in a press release.
Upon accepting the invitation to speak to graduates and the wider community, he commented on the important role that the University plays in shaping positive change.
“GVSU’s commitment to innovation and community reflects the kind of environment where ideas take shape,” Wozniak said. “The curiosity and collaboration I’ve seen in Grand Rapids reminds me why investing in people and ideas matters.”
President Philomena Mantella also commented on the selection of Wozniak in the press release, and how his lasting impact on technological fields may shape the content of his speeches.
“GVSU is sincerely grateful to Steve Wozniak for donating his time to return to Grand Rapids and share his wisdom and guidance with our graduates,” Mantella said. “His career exemplifies the innovation, curiosity and impact that we strive to nurture in every GVSU student. From pioneering personal computing to advancing education through technology, he exemplifies how vision and perseverance can transform ideas into reality.”
As graduating students anticipate the upcoming Commencement ceremonies, an opportunity presents itself for reflection on University experiences. Wozniak is slated to offer thought-provoking insight backed by years of expertise and invention. His words have the potential to inspire students toward deeper considerations of not only their pasts, but their futures ahead.
