GLIAC cancels all sports activites, winter and spring championships for all NCAA sports
Mar 14, 2020
Friday afternoon, the GLIAC came out with a statement cancelling all athletic activities, and the winter and spring NCAA championships in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The following statement can be found on both gliac.org and gvsulakers.com.
Effective immediately, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Grand Valley State, in consultation with the Council of Presidents and athletic directors, has canceled all athletically-related activity through May 31, 2020. During this unprecedented world-wide fight against the COVID-19 threat, the GLIAC supports national and NCAA efforts to protect student-athletes, coaches, fans and communities.
In accordance with these cancellations, the NCAA has issued a dead period until at least April 15, banning all NCAA schools from in-person recruiting. At this time, GVSU Football’s Pro Day, which was scheduled earlier this spring, is likely to be postponed in lieu of schools like Ohio State University moving back their pro day.
Due to the mass cancellation across not just NCAA but pretty much all professional sports worldwide, the future of the Lanthorn Sports section for the remainder of the year is up in the air. We will be spreading new information if something develops.
As is the case in show business, the show must go on for the Grand Valley Lanthorn. We will providing more news updates as the situation continues to develop.
We will be posting our regularly scheduled sports section to go along with the print and online editions of our next newspaper, which is set to come out the morning of Monday, March 16.
