GV unveils new championships board
Grand Valley State University Athletics unveiled the Joan Boand Wall of NCAA Championships in the Fieldhouse last week on what would have been the school’s homecoming date. The ceremony was small and socially distanced. GVSU Athletic Director Keri Becker and GVSU President Philomena Mantella spoke at the event.
While the event did celebrate Boand’s achievements at GVSU, her legacy has never been in question. She began her career as a Laker in 1966 when she was an assistant professor in physical education and she soon became the main advocate for women’s athletics at the school.
Boand has her fingerprints over virtually every women’s athletic program at GVSU including volleyball, basketball, softball, and track and field. Her career marks include 745 total wins and 10 GLIAC championships.
Boand coached the volleyball team for 26 years, winning six championships and winning two coach of the year awards consecutively. She also coached the women’s basketball team for five years, winning 132 games and four consecutive GLIAC championships. Boand also served as the softball coach for eight seasons.
After her coaching career, Boand moved on to become the Associate Athletics Director at GVSU and became the Senior Women’s Administrator where she served the school and several NCAA committees. She retired in 1999 and created the Joan Boand Athletics Scholarship. Her distinguished career still impacts athletes, coaches and administrators at GVSU today.
