GV Softball sweeps Ohio Dominican
On Saturday March 20, the GVSU softball team won both of their contests against Ohio Dominican.
To start the double header, the Lakers won 1-0 with a dominating pitching performance from both teams. The game went into extra innings, and the Lakers were able to pick up the only score of the game in the top of the 8th inning. Hannah Beatus (3-1) pitched all eight innings, gave up zero runs and struckout nine batters. Shortstop Lydia Goble grounded out and Megan Koenigshof scored.
In the second game of the series, GVSU won 4-1. The Lakers scored all of their runs in the fourth inning. Ashley Platek (2-1) pitched all seven innings giving up just one run and striking out five batters.
Koenigshof once again provided an important at-bat, hitting a triple that scored three runs for the Lakers. Goble also had an RBI in the second game of the series.
GV Baseball drops two in a row to Tiffin University
Against Tiffin University, the Lakers dropped their first two games of their three game series. In the first game, the Lakers lost 1-4. Nick Rutkowski pitched 4.1 innings and gave up four earned runs, taking the loss for the Lakers. 2B Cade Stanton singled through the right side of the infield to pick up the only RBI of the game for the Lakers.
GVSU lost their next game 1-4 as well. In this matchup, Austin Brown (0-1) picked up the loss for the Lakers, despite not giving up a single earned run. Brown struck out six Tiffin batters.
The only score of the game for the Lakers came in the top of the ninth inning. CF Nathan Logan hit an RBI single to bring 1B Ryan Blake-Jones home. After their last game against Tiffin, the Lakers will take on Purdue-Northwest.
Volleyball wins both games against Ashland
The GVSU volleyball team swept their weekend series against Ashland University. In their first matchup, the Lakers won all three of the first games of the series.
GVSU dominated the contest by having 49 kills, six aces, 47 assists, and 70 digs as a team. Ali Thompson led the team with 19 kills and two aces. Rachel Jacquay had a dominant stat line with 45 assists. Jayla Wesley recorded eight kills and a team high four blocks. Abby Graham led the team with 23 digs and also contributed two assists.
In the second matchup of the series, GVSU again won the first three games to earn a victory. They won these series by a larger margin in their second outing. In this series, Sarah Wright led the team with nine kills and three blocks. Jacquay had another impressive performance with 23 assists and one ace.
