GV men’s club hockey wins first game of the season

In their fourth matchup of their inaugural season as a Division I team, the Grand Valley State University men’s club hockey team took their first win against the Aquinas Saints. The Lakers competed in two games during the weekend, losing their first against the Saints on Friday, Oct. 1 6-3 for their home game, but coming back on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Southside arena for the win.

The Lakers came out swinging in the first period of their second game with freshman wing Mason Breit scoring the first goal of the game ten minutes in. The Saints left the first period with no goals, but coming back into the second with three goals in a row, putting the Lakers down 3-1.  Just 20 seconds later, the Lakers retaliated with another three goals by junior wing Zack Kippe, junior defense Cameron Beckwit and junior center Evan Chomchai. The veteran players on a young team took the reins in the second period, ending with a score of 4-3. After one last goal by junior wing Zach Borchardt halfway through the third and a final goal by the Saints, the end of the game was the Laker’s at 4-5.

The GVSU club hockey team will continue their season on Wednesday, Oct. 6 to face off against Indiana Tech at the Griff’s Georgetown home rink.

GV tennis competed against University of Illinois-Chicago bringing home one win

During the weekend, the men’s and women’s tennis teams competed in Chicago, Illinois for their third matchup of the season. The men brought home the win with 5-2, sweeping the doubles. Joseph Canyadell and Sean Miller won the first matchup 6-2, Freddy Cossio and Thomas Oliveira won theirs 7-5, and Sebasian Acre and Martin Matov won the last doubles 7-6. The overall score for the men’s side was 5-2.

The women walked away from the competition with no such luck, getting shut out for a final score of 0-7. In the doubles, Estefania Hernandez and Vasilia Griva took the only win of the day with a score of 7-5. Their next game will take place at home against Cornerstone University on Friday, Oct. 8 at 6:00 p. m for their penultimate competition of the season.

GV golfer, Kay Zubkus, earns GLIAC Golfer of the Week

Sophomore golfer Kay Zubkus took the honorary title of golfer of the week after her impressive achievements at the Bulldog Fall Invitational. On Sept. 27 she scored four-over par (148) to take the first place win, helping her team get to a final score of 598 (+22). This was the women’s golf team’s best score of the season so far, closely followed by Findlay with a score of (612).

On Monday, Oct. 5, the Lakers will continue their season at the William Beall Fall Classic in Ohio.
