I’ve had a past of not being very interested in politics due to the often controversial nature of political discussion. Politics is usually considered a negative talking point in American culture. People usually butt heads, which can make others around them feel uncomfortable. In recent years, U.S. politics have been increasingly polarized; this has made it difficult for varying groups of people to come together and get along. Due to these factors, I used to shy away from being too involved in politics, but now, as an adult, I understand the importance of staying updated on governmental affairs.
In the past, one of my reasons for not actively engaging in politics was that I was a fence-sitter, and convinced that remaining neutral on political affairs would satisfy everyone, including myself. I was sure that by not actively engaging in politics, I was providing myself with a peaceful and stress-free life of not having to worry about anything happening within our government. In reality, I was simply comfortable in my ignorance and wasn’t allowing myself to form my own opinions.
Nowadays, I realize the policies that I was sitting on are not just “controversial” topics, but policies that have a huge impact on people. By advocating and engaging more in politics, I can better support those who are affected by such policies. Everyone should keep that in mind before they decide to withdraw from politics. Secondly, I believe there is a balance. You don’t have to drown yourself in politics, but how are you not going to be involved in making decisions that affect you and others?
On a similar note, by shying away from forming your own political beliefs, you likely will come across legislation that you deem to be unjust or incorrect. For example, lots of people who chose not to vote in the presidential election are finding out the Department of Education is on the chopping block. Suddenly, these people who chose not to vote for any candidate feel very negatively about current or potential policy changes. However, if these people were at least somewhat in the loop regarding current events they would’ve known about President Trump’s agenda, and would have voted against what they now seem to be against. By not engaging in politics, you have less of a voice to speak about governmental affairs.
Education is an important tool, and without utilizing it, you will be unable to interact with policies and politicians you disagree with. Research allows you to make decisions on your own behalf without regurgitating others’ opinions. Being knowledgeable about what you believe in and voting shows that you are taking charge of your life. You are making your voice heard and letting people know that you will stand by your beliefs. If you are not voting or taking firm stances, someone else will fill that job for you, whether you agree with them or not. If you are not loudly voicing what you have an issue with, you will be talked over.
In America’s current political climate, a lot of us, including myself, believe that our human rights are being tested by current government leaders. I hope that others who also believe this realize that our democratic politicians won’t save us on their own, and will have to be pushed to do so. We have to be the change that we want to see in the world and that’s why I no longer sit on the fence.
