Early November, almost a full year after President Donald Trump won a second term, another Election Day took place, one that had the potential to change the fabric of American politics for years to come.
The results from Tuesday, Nov. 4 can truly be seen as a sweeping victory for the Democratic Party. In nearly every major election, the Democrats came out victorious against their right-wing challengers. Among the more notable races were key congressional contests in Virginia and New Jersey, where Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill won their seats, dealing a meaningful blow to the Republican Party. To understand why this Election Day was such a momentous victory for the Democrats, one only has to consider the recent government shutdown that has put SNAP benefits for millions in jeopardy. Who would’ve thought that stealing food from the plates of your voters may turn them against you?
Economic hardship was a central focus of the New York City mayoral race, which proved to be one of the most consequential contests of the 2025 election, and is likely to be remembered for decades to come. This was an out-of-the-ordinary election to say the least, with not just two but three major candidates who could have come out with a win. One of those candidates, Andrew Cuomo, having recently been the governor of the State of New York, a decidedly higher office. For months, Zohran Mamdani, Curtis Sliwa and Cuomo fought it out for the coveted NYC mayoral seat.
Mamdani’s success in the race can largely be traced to his promises to establish city-owned grocery stores, free childcare and bus systems, freeze the rent and punish bad landlords. In short, Mamdani successfully ran on social policies designed to make New York City affordable for its residents. Mamdani’s victory symbolizes a new path forward for the Democratic Party. His campaign sought to address the party’s shortfalls that contributed to the rise of Trump. With his victory, Mamdani introduced a working-class character into the Democratic Party to a level of success his predecessors, such as Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, could only dream of. The success of this type of campaign speaks for itself, as socialist candidates from around the country won local elections to an extent not seen in over a century.
In fact, there were even several local seats won by members of the Communist Party USA, many of them being city council seats. While money may still rule in Washington, D.C, the tide of politics at the local and grassroots level is shifting in an undeniably socialist direction. As I have written before, back when Mamdani won his primary several months ago, the ball is now in the court of the Democratic Party. Their neoliberal policies have been proven failures, and the promise of Mamdani’s socialist policies is a win.
The Democrats now must decide what is more important to them: providing a real electoral and grassroots fight against Trump and all that he and his movement stand for, or looking after the wills and wishes of corporate donors instead of protecting the working class.
