The Tim Hortons on Lake Michigan Drive in Allendale has closed. Tim Hortons provided an inexpensive, convenient option for students to grab breakfast on the way to classes.
Opened in 2013, the shop served their iconic coffee, donuts, bagels and breakfast sandwiches for over a decade. According to Allendale Township Supervisor, Adam Elenbaas, the property has now changed hands. The land is zoned and permitted for a drive-through coffee shop, so it is likely that a similar establishment could replace it.
Tim Horton’s area supervisor has not responded to request for comment at time of publication.
Although the exact reason for the closure is not clear, Yelp reviews of the establishment express an overall dissatisfaction with the quality of service and items that customers received. One customer expressed that “the ordering seems to get lost in translation,” as part of their order was consistently missing or incorrect. The reviews also show inconsistencies in the quality of orders and customer service, with multiple reviews stating that employees were rude and beverages were watery.
Some students expressed disappointment at the restaurant’s permanent closure.
Senior Kelsi Cobb said she didn’t know that Tim Horton’s was closed until she drove past and saw the sign. She shared that the location was often out of the type of donuts she wanted, but she was satisfied with the taste nonetheless. Affordability made it her go-to spot for coffee.
Other students appreciated the close proximity of the shop to campus, but felt indifferent to its closure due to other coffee spots open nearby.
“It’s gonna be a bummer not being able to have Timbits, but there’s other food in Allendale,” said senior Enzo Arcamone.
The Grandville location permanently closed in February 2025, as well as the Wyoming and Kalamazoo locations. The Plainfield Avenue location in Comstock Park shared that their store has been noticeably busier following the recent closures.
Students will have to drive as far as Holland or Kentwood to get their fix of Timbits.
