The bats of the Grand Valley State University softball team (17-13) told the story of momentum, resilience and a team finding its rhythm at just the right time.
Riding a five-game win streak into April 3, the Lakers added two more chapters to their season with a doubleheader sweep over Wayne State University (12-15), edging out a 4–3 thriller in game one before unleashing an 8–0 run-rule victory in the nightcap. The wins pushed GVSU to 17–13 overall and a strong 7–1 mark in Great Lakes Intercolligate Athletic Conference play.
It didn’t take long for the Lakers to make their presence felt. With two outs in the opening inning, sophomore pitcher Grace Usher stepped into the box and turned a routine start into something electrifying. After freshman infielder Camryn Hall reached base to set the stage, Usher drove a pitch deep to center field, sending it over the fence for her first home run of the season and a quick 2–0 lead.
That early jolt carried through the middle innings. In the third, Usher again came through — this time with a sharp single to right that brought junior outfielder Faith Edwards all the way home from first. Moments later, senior outfielder Eliana Eiland added to the rally, lining a ball into right field to plate Usher and stretch the advantage to 4–0.
The Warriors found life in the sixth inning, capitalizing on one swing to cut the deficit to a single run with a three-run blast to right field. Suddenly, the comfortable cushion had vanished, and tension settled over the field, but in the circle, sophomore pitcher Karli Dorr remained composed.
With the game on the line in the seventh, Dorr delivered a shutdown inning, retiring the side in order and sealing the 4–3 win. She went the distance, scattering seven hits while striking out five, earning her seventh victory of the season.
Usher led the offensive charge, finishing with three RBIs and scoring twice, while Hall, Eiland and redshirt junior outfielder Jenna Ballard each contributed multi-hit efforts to keep the pressure on throughout.
The Lakers carried their momentum straight into the second game, striking quickly with three runs in the opening inning. Usher drove in the first, freshman infielder Kylee Hoebeke added another on a sacrifice fly and junior catcher Liv Regenfuss capped the surge with a run-scoring double.
The Lakers kept control from there, adding two more runs in the fifth through a mix of timely hitting and aggressive base running. Then, came the finishing touch — senior infielder Carsyn Segorski’s bases-clearing double down the left field line, ending the game early with an 8–0 lead.
Hall paced the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while Usher stayed hot at the plate. In the circle, senior Nevaeh Ingram was dominant, allowing just three hits over five scoreless innings to secure the shutout.
GVSU will travel to Chicago for a series against Roosevelt University (9-20) beginning Wednesday at 2 p.m.
