The No. 19 Grand Valley State University men’s basketball team (20-4) earned a weekend sweep, defeating Roosevelt University (4-19) 81-52 before holding off the University of Wisconsin–Parkside (11-13) 73-57, both at the Fieldhouse Arena.
The two wins highlighted the Lakers’ offensive depth, 3-point shooting and veteran leadership as the University continued to build momentum in conference play heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
GVSU built control early against Roosevelt in the Thursday Lakers-vs-Lakers matchup, using timely perimeter shooting and defensive rebounds to separate in the first half.
Redshirt-junior guard David Wilkerson opened the scoring surge with a step-back 3-pointer to give GVSU a 5-4 lead with 18:54 remaining. Although Roosevelt briefly answered to go up 9-7, the Lakers responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from redshirt-junior guard Charles Turner and senior forward Ethan Alderink to regain momentum.
Wilkerson continued his strong first half, knocking down another pull-up 3-pointer with 4:24 left, pushing the lead to 26-19. He capped the half with a final step-back triple as the Lakers carried a 33-30 advantage into halftime. Wilkerson scored 15 of his game-high points in the opening period.
GVSU broke the game open in the second half. After a defensive rebound from redshirt junior Shamus Thompson, senior guard Mason Docks drilled a 3-pointer that extended the lead to 40-35. Docks struck again midway through the half, pushing the advantage to 55-37.
A day shy of his birthday, Alderink recorded his second double-double of the season and fourth of his career with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Coming out of a timeout, Charity’s driving layup gave GVSU a 59-39 lead while also pushing him past the 1,000-point mark for his career. He became the 36th player in program history to reach the milestone.
“My team is really supporting me, and I really appreciate that,” Charity said. “My teammates, the fans, the community — I really appreciate it.”
The Lakers closed the game comfortably, with Marcus Gray II and Jackson McGee each adding late 3-pointers as GVSU secured the 81-52 win.
Saturday’s matchup against UW-Parkside provided a sharper test, as the Rangers jumped out to a 17-7 lead early in the first half. Alderink and Docks helped steady the Lakers with a pair of 3-pointers that cut the deficit to one, before Thompson’s layup briefly put GVSU back in front.
Wilkerson delivered a key bucket late in the half, hitting a pull-up 3-pointer with 1:14 remaining that gave the Lakers a 32-29 lead. Despite committing 10 turnovers, GVSU held a slim 32-31 advantage at the break.
“A lot of times when we play in the first half, we’re figuring out what adjustments we have to make at halftime,” said head coach Cornell Mann. “We can take advantage of the ‘game feel’ in the second half.”
Parkside trimmed the lead to one early in the second half, but junior guard Antaune Allen and Docks responded with consecutive 3-pointers to create separation. Docks caught fire from deep, hitting multiple pull-up 3-pointers as GVSU extended its lead to 63-50.
The Lakers maintained control down the stretch, building a 73-54 lead before closing out the 73-57 victory.
“Each game from here on out means a lot,” Docks said. “It’s my senior season, so every game is another step, and it means a lot to our whole team with the season we’re having.”
The Lakers travel to face Saginaw Valley State University (11-13) Thursday, with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
