Club women’s hockey sweeps Colorado State

For the second consecutive weekend, the Grand Valley State women’s club hockey team swept a two-game series. This weekend, the Lakers topped Colorado State 4-1 Friday, Jan. 20 and 14-0 Saturday, Jan. 21.

In Friday’s game, the Lakers (12-6-3) jumped out to an early lead with a goal from Megyn Beebe in the first five minutes of the game. Colorado State answered back later in the period, but GVSU scored shortly after to regain the one-goal lead.

In the second period, Allison Lowe scored twice, both assisted by Karyn Schmaltz. The GVSU defense held the Rams scoreless in the final two periods for a 4-1 win.

In Saturday’s game, GVSU’s potent offense was on full display. The Lakers scored four goals in the first period and five goals in the second and third periods. Three goals were scored in a 45-second window towards the end of the first period.

Schmaltz and Kendra Myers both recorded a hat trick, and Briana Weglarz and Corey Robison each added a pair of goals. Sally Hoerr led the team in points with six, one goal and five assists.

The Lakers next series will be against Michigan in a home-and-away two-game series Saturday, Feb. 4 and Sunday, Feb. 5. GVSU will host the Wolverines Saturday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Georgetown Ice Center.

DI club roller hockey wins three of four

The Grand Valley State Division I men’s roller hockey club traveled to Shelby Township, MI to play a four-game weekend series at the Joe Dumars Fieldhouse. The Lakers (11-3) won three of their four games over the weekend, beating Temple 16-1, Robert Morris 8-0 and Rowan 5-4, and losing the final game to Neumann 7-1.

In the first game against Temple Saturday, Jan. 21, GVSU’s Aaron Mizgalski scored two goals and dished out nine assists. Garrett Polish scored six goals along with three assists, and Dominic Zuelch scored four goals with a lone assist.

The Lakers continued their dominance in the second game of the day against Robert Morris. Polish scored six goals while Kenny Wurth notched four assists.

In the final game of the day, GVSU escaped with a 5-4 overtime win over Rowan. The Lakers were down by three goals heading into the third period, but Cody Hagen scored early in the third to cut the lead to two goals. Polish scored two goals in 12 seconds later in the period to tie the game. Polish also scored the game-winning goal in the shootout.

GVSU’s momentum was finally stopped by Neumann in a 7-1 loss. Tyler Stoller had the Lakers lone goal of the game.

D3 club roller hockey sweeps weekend series

The Grand Valley State Division III men’s roller hockey club won three games over the weekend at Joe Dumars Fieldhouse in Shelby Township, MI. The Lakers beat Western Michigan 13-3 and Michigan (DII) 7-2 Saturday, Jan. 21 and Michigan Tech (DII) 8-2 Sunday, Jan. 22.

The Lakers handled the Broncos in the first game of the weekend. Carl Soderling notched a pair of goals and assists, and Stefan Ropp recorded a hat trick in the 13-3 win.

Against Michigan, the Lakers kept the offense rolling. Soderling scored another two goals, and Tyler Stoller added two more.

Stoller kept the momentum in the third game against Michigan Tech, recording a hat trick in the 8-2 win. Wesley Guthrie added a goal and two assists, and Connor Huizenga dished out two assists.
