It is that time of the year again – when siblings, nieces, nephews and children ages six and older are invited to Grand Valley State University on Jan. 30 through Jan. 31 for the annual Sibs N Kids Weekend. This year, children are invited to save the world during the superhero-themed weekend.

Ashley Grzywacz, the Sibs N Kids coordinator for the Laker Traditions Team, said they are hoping to have children experience life at GVSU.

“Although every day isn’t fun and games, children are exposed to having a sleepover with their siblings, to see the new library and to have fun,” Grzywacz said. “We also want to provide a fun weekend that is tailored for the younger generation, as we often see siblings being miles apart from each other.

“This weekend is perfect for them to share a weekend and make long lasting memories. The same goes for those students and faculty bringing their kids or those students brining younger relatives or friends.”

Grzywacz said the Laker Traditions Team usually has between 300 and 400 kids registered each year, though there is not a final number for this year’s registration because it increases drastically in the few days leading up to the event. Last year, a snow storm hit on the weekend of Sibs N Kids and less than half of the children registered could attend.

On Friday, the scheduled events include The Valley Exotic Zoo in Room 2270 of Kirkhof, a Superhero Transformation Room where participants can create their own cape and mask to star in your own superhero photo shoot, video games, laser tag, a puppetry show, a screening of the movie “The Incredibles” and a glow in the dark dance party.

Saturday’s events include bounce houses, dance lessons, rock climbing, a superhero market, a night at the YMCA and the showing of the film “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

Some of the groups sponsoring this year’s Sibs N Kids Weekend are 48 West, Spotlight Productions, the puppetry club, Rhythm in Blue, the swing dance club, the Royal Dancers and the YMCA, which will be open for all GVSU sibs and kids.

The cost to register is $20 per guest with potential additional fees depending on individual activities. Guests are encouraged to bring pillows and blankets, outdoor playing gear, bathing suits and towels, any necessary medications and a few extra dollars for bookstore purchases and snacks.

Check in occurs in the Kirkhof Center on Friday, Jan. 30, where volunteers will assist guests in picking up their information packet, meal coupons and final schedules for the program.
