The Grand Valley State University women’s golf team came away with a second place finish – with a three-round score of 308-310-309 and a combined total of 927 – at the NCAA Division II East Regional at the Findlay Country Club last Tuesday. The University of Indianapolis took home the title with a combined score of 911.

The second-place finish was good enough to advance the Lakers to the NCAA Division II National Championships this week. The appearance will be their fourth-consecutive year advancing to nationals, with 10 appearances since 2000.

It took a team effort, with a strong performance from freshman Kelly Hartigan placing third and leading the Lakers to the win in the final round. The GLIAC Player of the Year, senior Sarah Hoffman, finished in a tie for fourth with an overall score of 225.

The last two scorers, sophomore Veronica Ryan and junior Marni Weinstein helped the Lakers score propelling them to their second place finish in front of California (Penn.), who placed third (932) in the final round.

The Lakers will take on their competition again at nationals on Tuesday, when they travel to the NCAA Division II Championships Festival in Louisville, Ky., at the Persimmon Ridge Golf Course.
