For the seventh consecutive year, Grand Valley State University claimed the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup awarded by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics on Thursday. The Director’s Cup recognizes the top athletic department in the country based on a scoring system of men’s and women’s national finishes in 14 sports.
“This is an accomplishment that really reflects on the quality of student-athletes we have at Grand Valley State,” said Tim Selgo, GVSU athletic director, in a press release. “I am extremely proud of our coaches and administration and thank the university for its wonderful support of our athletic program.”
GVSU gained points from seven men’s and seven women’s sports for a total of 1,021.5 points. The runner up for the Director’s Cup was California University of Pennsylvania with 703 points. Of the 16 teams GVSU sent to the postseason, 11 finished in the top 10 of the nation.
A big contributor in GVSU’s win this year was the first-time National Champion women’s soccer team. Football, women’s cross country and women’s indoor track and field teams all finished second in the nation, bringing in a significant number of points.
