GLIAC honors GVSU’s Strauss, Peterson, Janecke
On Friday, three Grand Valley State student athletes were honored with Fall 2014 GLIAC Commissioner’s Awards. Andrea Strauss, the goalie for GVSU’s soccer team, and cross country runners Alan Peterson and Jessica Janecke were recognized for their work both on and off the field.
Strauss, a senior, recorded five postseason shutouts to help lead the Lakers to their fourth national championship in six years. An allied heath sciences major, Strauss also posted a 3.698 GPA.
Peterson, also a senior, paced GVSU to its second consecutive second-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship, where he placed eighth with a time of 30:42.40. The Ironwood, Mich. native sports a 3.71 GPA as a geography major.
Janecke, a junior, earned a spot on the podium to help the Laker women capture their third straight NCAA Division II title. Janecke, a biomedical science major, has a 3.54 GPA.
Miami (OH) sweeps GVSU in weekend series
The Grand Valley State women’s club hockey team suffered a 2-0 series loss to Miami of Ohio at the Georgetown Ice Arena over the weekend, falling to the RedHawks by scores of 4-2 and 2-0.
GVSU’s Frankie Wojtylo struck first in Friday night’s game, but the momentum didn’t last long.
Miami clawed back, scoring four unanswered goals — two in the first period and two in the second. Corey Robison found the back of the net for the Lakers in the third frame, but it wasn’t enough.
On Saturday, Miami’s Carly Noble scored just 16 seconds into the game to give the RedHawks an early edge. The visitors dialed up the defensive intensity from there, turning away every GVSU opportunity and escaping with a 2-0 win.
GVSU is scheduled to hit the ice at home for another two-game set this weekend against Lake Superior State on Friday and Saturday.
